History and Mysteries of
Freemasonry
Book
Reviews
Jim Tresnor of the Scottish Rite Journal says:
In this interesting book, the author explains he is dealing with legend as well
as history, and generally he makes the differences quite clear. Many Brothers
have heard other Masons talk about some of the Craft's legendary beginnings, but
have seldom seen these concepts in print. They are provided here, and knowing
them makes it much easier to understand some of the discussions you are likely
to have about Freemasonry. There is also information about the spread of
Masonry, Masonic symbolism, and many other topics. After the book was printed,
Dr. Breeding discovered there were several errors in typography in Chapter 4. To
remedy the errors, he had the chapter reprinted as an addition and inserted the
corrected version in the back of the book—an attention to detail and accuracy
which I appreciate. This book is a good survey of both legend and fact, which I
think you would enjoy.
K. I. Wright, Tennessee's Grand Master F&AM,
2000, says:
"It is highly educational and informative, and I believe that every Mason should
read and study this material. It is not only informative to Masons but to
non-Masons as well, and it gives great insight into the history of Freemasonry
from the very beginning to the present. I hope that all who read this book will
enjoy it as much as I have. It is truly more light in Masonry."
Bob Demott, Tennessee's Grand Historian says:
"Brother Breeding is to be congratulated on bringing this concise account of of
the History and Mysteries of Freemasonry to the Masons of America-and it should
be of immense use for generations to come."
Mel Hines, Potentate of Kerbela Temple in Knoxville, TN. in 2000 says:
"For anyone who is sincere about the background of Masonry, this book is a MUST
reading. In addition to its wealth of general knowledge, it contains a 114-page
Glossary of Masonic Words and Terms, which I believe to be the most
comprehensive ever assembled in one source. The meticulous manner in which he
has put this valuable material together makes this book one that I highly
recommend for a better understanding of Masonry."
Randall K. Thompson, WM of Bright Hope Lodge
No. 557, says:
"This book is an extremely useful tool for every Mason, since, regardless of how
long he has been traveling, there is a constant need for more light and
information (about Masonry)--and to have such an outstanding book to use in
researching questions lesser informed brothers might ask us, is wonderful. I
found all of the book to be very useful, well written, and highly informative,
with the Glossary of Masonic Words and Terms being especially insightful."
David C. Wolfenbarger, Potentate of Kerbela Temple in Knoxville, TN. in 1993,
says:
"What a great job! In my 34 years as a Mason, most of which time I have served
as a lodge officer, I have not found so much readable and useful information
(about Freemasonry) between the covers of one book. This is an outstanding piece
of research and writing, and it is a great resource book for the serious Mason
of today."
Benjamin Adkins, Sr., Potentate of Kerbela Temple in Knoxville, TN. in 1997,
says:
"In my 25 years as a Mason I have never seen a book so explanatory and
elucidative, and so scholastically researched and written, about the history of
Masonry. I received more light from this book than any other form of written
material I have ever encountered."
